Full Moon in Aries – October 2011 – The Magic Carpet

The Full Moon in Aries occurs at 18ARI24 on the 12th October 2011 at 2:05am (UT).

Full Moon in Aries can be a temperamental Moon. The impulse is to rush around all fired up with ideas, leaping at the first chance to do something exciting, go where no one else has been. But this Full Moon is tightly opposed to Saturn in Libra. With the Sun and Saturn still in conjunction, both seem to be shouting ‘hold your horses!’ to the Moon and she probably doesn’t like it one little bit. Not to mention Black Moon Lilith whose eyes are blazing red is sitting just 3 degrees away. Don’t tell Lilith what to do. No, really…I did warn you…

Oh and it might be a good time to mention that Eris is also conjunct Black Moon Lilith. The Witches of Eastwick come to mind…

Mars as Ruler of the Moon makes a flowing trine to our lunar lady, further
energising her and giving her the courage to do what she needs to do. The problem is that Mars is also square Jupiter, making things feel urgent and inflamed. But Saturn calmly sits by the Sun, reminding us that sometimes things take time; sometimes there are delays; sometimes you really do have to consider others before you do what you want to do.

“It’s all about give and take” says Saturn, sucking on a cherry.

The witches cackle in the background.

The Sabian Symbol for the Full Moon is: –

The “Magic Carpet” Of Oriental Imagery.

To me, this symbol is about getting perspective. Marc Edmund Jones states that the keyword for this symbol is ‘panorama’.

The Flying Carpet by Viktor VasnetsovIn fairy stories, a magic carpet appears as a device to transport the hero to
another place in the blink of an eye. Coming originally through a translation of the tales of the 1001 Arabian Nights, an oriental carpet is as exotic as it is magical.  The intricate weave is a prize in itself. When we speak of wishing that a magic carpet would whisk us away, we are longing to be somewhere else, seeing something different, needing a magical miracle. On a magic carpet no one has to worry about airport strikes, train delays and lost luggage.

The Magic Carpet suits the fiery feel of this Aries Moon. Mars in kingly Leo of course will see himself flying through the air like King Solomon. But Saturn is pulling the Moon back down to earth, refusing to let her be swept up in her imagination. One look from Saturn and the magic carpet turns into a dusty old rug without any magical powers that needs to be swept.

“Reality check” sniffs Saturn.

Mars is unfortunately on the fixed Star Acubens. Ebertin says of this combination that “this will make for an unsettled mentality and helplessness”. Mars isn’t used to feeling helpless and trine to the North Node he feels as though he has things to do and places to be.

The trick with this Moon is to get a sense of perspective which means asking others for their honest opinion. Mercury trine Neptune shows that, despite the Saturn dampening effect, you have the chance to tune in to what’s going on and listen to your intuition. Be on your guard however as Mercury and Neptune can be inclined to tell little white lies to save the feelings of another. Whilst there is a time and a place for these small untruths, this might be one of those times when everyone needs to tell it like it is or not say it at all.

Look to where the Full Moon occurs in your chart. Are you fantasizing over what you could achieve in this area of life? Great – it’s all good but you don’t have a magic carpet. What you do have however, is courage and a willingness to go your own way.

Look to where Mars is in your chart. This is the area of life where you are being encouraged to take action. But it needs to be cautious action.

Check which house the transiting North Node is in. Currently in Sagittarius, our beliefs are being called into question. We need to be more adventurous in our approach, to get to where we need to be.

Check in with someone older and wiser who has walked the path before you – a friend, lover, colleague or coach. The house position of the Sun-Saturn combo will show you where they are. They can offer you a different perspective, one which is realistic and you can work with. Impatience isn’t going to get you very far. Nor will a bubbling brew of eye of newt and toe of frog.

For me, this Full Moon is conjunct my natal North Node in the 9th house (right beside natal Saturn. It’s a big one for me as it’s also kicking off my
current Saturn opposition by transit (oh the joys).

I’ve been finding myself wondering about my faith – just what exactly is it? I’m Pagan yet my connection is strongest to Father Sky instead of Mother Earth. The sky and stars have always been my inspiration. I know Christians, Muslims and Jews who follow the tenants of their faith quietly, with dignity and exude a completeness in their spirituality. With Mars travelling through my first house and the North Node currently in my 5th, I’m looking for something that gives me the courage to express my creativity and to feel more ‘me’. I’m wondering if my own path can be mixed with something more conventional, in order to connect. Or maybe it’s simply about connecting with others who are following a spiritual path (Mercury rules my 11th
house). The Sun and Saturn transiting my 3rd house suggest it’s time to consult with someone in my local community.

I’m also considering booking a session with a mentor, to increase my confidence in my work, to listen to someone who has already been there and done that. I listening to podcasts on writing and spirituality. All give me food for thought.

Sometimes I wish I had a magic carpet to whisk me away to Portugal where I can sit by the river and just think. But Saturn demands that I work hard and learn what I need to learn. There’s no rest for this witch and I sorely doubt Jack Nicholson is going to appear over the horizon any time soon.

This is the Hunter’s Moon, you need to tread softly on the earth, move carefully and source your target with care. Take your time, stay grounded and let the magic unfold.
